The 17 Brigade of the Nigerian Army has clarified the circumstances surrounding the death of a soldier, Corporal Ude Jude, dismissing reports of internal sabotage and neglect as misleading.
This is contained in a statement issued on Sunday by the Acting Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, 17 Brigade, Abayomi Adisa.
Adisa described viral media reports suggesting foul play within the barracks as “deliberately crafted to misinform the public,” noting that the deceased was not a lieutenant, as widely reported, but a corporal enlisted in 2012 under the 67 Regular Recruit Intake.
According to the statement, the incident leading to his death did not occur within the barracks but while he was deployed at a Forward Operating Base in Funtua.
“On Feb. 16, at about 8:30 p.m., the soldier reportedly left his duty post to purchase personal items when he was attacked,” Adisa said.
He explained that preliminary investigations indicated the incident arose from a physical altercation with a civilian over a personal dispute.
The spokesperson said the injured soldier was immediately given first aid and evacuated to the 17 Brigade Medical Centre, where he received sustained medical care.
He added that the soldier was later relieved of duty to allow for full recovery, following medical reports indicating he suffered stab wounds and other injuries consistent with a violent encounter.
“Despite weeks of treatment and clinical monitoring, the soldier collapsed outside his residence on March 24, 2026, shortly after receiving medical care.
“He was rushed back to the Medical Centre but was confirmed dead on arrival,” Adisa stated.
He further disclosed that the Garrison Commander supervised arrangements for the burial, including provision of a coffin and mortuary services, while additional support was provided by the 82 Division Garrison in Enugu.
Adisa noted that all military accoutrements of the deceased were handed over to his next of kin in line with standard procedures, adding that the brigade maintained communication with the bereaved family throughout the period.
He said security personnel were also deployed during the burial.
The army explained that the delay in issuing a public statement was due to the need to verify facts and consult relevant authorities to ensure accurate reporting.
Adisa assured that efforts to identify and apprehend those responsible for the attack are ongoing, adding that justice would be served.
While mourning the loss, the brigade reaffirmed its commitment to personnel welfare, professionalism and transparency, and urged the public to rely on credible and official sources of information.
